Shinnyo (Higashi Hongan-ji school) (真如 (東本願寺))

Shinnyo (1682 - November 5, 1744) was a Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land Sect Buddhism) priest and the 17th Hoshu (high priest) of the Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. His ingo (title given to a Buddhist priest) was Kudokujuin. His imina (personal name) was Kousei. His gago (pseudonym) was Gukai. His childhood name was Koyomaro.

He was born the first son of Jonyo, the 15th Hoshu of the Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. In 1700, his uncle Ichinyo, who was the 16th Hoshu, died and Shinnyo succeeded as the 17th Hoshu. His achievements included the renovation of Otani Sobyo Grave, the reconstruction of Nanba Betsuin and Yamashina Betsuin Chofuku-ji Temple, and he established the lecturer post for Otani University.

He died on November 5, 1744 at the age of 63.
